Head First into Korean Skincare
Written by Seoul Turtle
In Korean spa culture, skincare starts at the top of your head.
We often refer to the principle of 수승화강 (su-seung-hwa-gang) — “cool head, warm feet.” This traditional concept emphasizes ideal energy circulation throughout the body and is considered essential for maintaining balance and healthy skin.
When your head overheats — whether due to external factors like hot weather or internal stress — it can impact your skin’s firmness. Heat buildup in the scalp causes the skin at the top of your head to loosen. Even a 1mm loss of tightness in the scalp can lead to up to 5mm of sagging in the face due to gravity.
That’s why scalp care is directly linked to facial firmness.
In face-lifting procedures — whether through facial massage, aesthetic treatments, or surgery — the lifting often begins at the scalp and temporal regions. This is because the superficial fascia, a connective tissue layer, runs from the scalp down into the face. When the scalp becomes tense or loose, it can alter facial contours, especially around the forehead, eyebrows, cheeks, and jawline.
By caring for the scalp — particularly the top and sides of the head — we’re addressing the same areas targeted in professional face-lifting techniques.
This idea is already second nature to many in Korea. In fact, some people even used a soju glass in the past for DIY scalp massage!
R–W’s Scalp Cooling Care is designed to support this tradition.
It includes:
A cooling brush, with a built-in cooling agent that keeps the pins cold during massage to refresh and revitalize the scalp.
A botanical tonic, formulated with natural ingredients known for their cooling and anti-inflammatory properties to help soothe heat and restore balance.
